Ashes to Life
– A Portuguese American Story in Art
Fifty years ago, Volcão Dos Capelinhos, a volcano located
in the Azores Islands of Portugal, erupted in a display
of the art and temper of Mother Nature that changed
the shape of the island and brought about an immigration
of over 100,000 Azoreans to America. Portuguese American
farmers and ranchers have long provided our tables with
a bountiful cornucopia of fruits, vegetables, and beautiful
flowers. Likewise, our hearts and souls have been nurtured
by the artistic legacy of Portuguese American artists
such as Nathan Oliveira, Mel Ramos, John Mattos, and
João de Brito. Sanchez Art Center in Pacifica is honored
to host the exhibition, Ashes to Life – A Portuguese
American Story in Art, which celebrates, commemorates,
and embodies the history, contributions, and lives of
Portuguese Americans. |
