In the East Gallery, the 2022 LCA Exhibition Awards Show will present the works of
Ric Ambrose and Tamera Avery. These two prominent Bay Area artists were chosen by the 2022 Left Coast Annual juror, Jeff Nathanson, Executive Director and Art Curator, Museum of Sonoma County.
Equipped with graphite and an eraser, Ric Ambrose "recreates a colorless yet colorful world". These simple and portable materials belie the intricacy, depth and detail of these large-scale works drawn from memories and images of travels throughout the Bay Area, "immersed in its exotic diversity of architecture, landscape, and the paradoxes of human interaction and disengagement." The extended drawing format — spanning 6' to 10' — is derived in part from traditional Chinese landscape scrolls. The elongated format allows the viewer to experience the whole environment as well as its parts, moving through it visually as if he/she were actually travelling within its confines. This movement establishes a visual paradox -- while one might enjoy digesting the pictorial grandeur (macro) and opulent details (micro) in my work, there is an element of detachment, alienation or even entrapment. Tamera Avery's large scale oil on canvas works seem to beckon you to step into them, while leaving you unsure and at times uncomfortable as to what you will experience in her evocative landscapes inhabited by strong yet quiet heroes. A painter, living and working in San Francisco, Avery states, that her work is a celebration of youth, where the young are the champions of change in flawed social, political and environmental landscapes. Positioned in subtle, yet detailed surroundings, her subjects often wear masks and costumes that augment their agency and the space they take up. When not fully covered, eyes of her subjects are both wistful and resolute, protecting the environs today while standing as soothsayers visioning what is ahead. Viewing Avery's paintings rouses ones curiosity exploring the details and engages discussion and wonder about what is beyond. To see more: www.TameraAvery.com.
