Showing in the East
Gallery is an exhibition titled Shifting the Body: Explorations
from a Female Perspective, displaying work from the Asian American
Women Artists Association (AAWAA). The Asian American Women’s Association
is a nonprofit group dedicated to ensuring the visibility and documentation
of Asian American women in the arts. Their mission is to challenge
societal assumptions and promote dialogue through exhibitions, publications,
and educational programs.
The artwork in this show emphasizes a rehumanizing of the body, while providing an opportunity for Asian American Women to contribute to this conversation in a visual manner. The exhibit was curated by Pamela Ybanez, a guest curator brought forward by AAWAA’s curator mentorship program. Ms. Ybanez has selected 10 artists to exhibit in “Shifting the Body”: Kathy Aoki, Jennifer Huang, Bonnie Kwong, Julee Lee, Cathy Lu, Melissa Nolledo, We Lah Poh, Ruya Qian, Mara Red, and Cindy Shih.
